SS Rajamouli is distributors’ nightmare, theatres’ enemy

A view is gaining traction that SS Rajamouli has done more harm than good to Telugu cinema purely from the perspective of commerce. Surprised? Recently, a distributor from East Godavari commented that Rajamouli is harming the exhibition sector by binding a huge star like Mahesh Babu for three years. “Mahesh’s movies draw crowds to theatres. Imagine the loss in terms of revenue when such a superstar doesn’t have any releases for three straight years because he is preoccupied with Rajamouli’s movie,” the distributor said.

That’s an interesting argument against Rajamouli, who is typically the last person to finish projects in time. He has had only three theatrical releases in the last one decade. And only four in the last 13 years.

But there is another side to the coin. Directors who are good at finishing projects at a faster clip don’t necessarily make profitable ventures. Boyapati Srinu and Puri Jagannadh are two good examples. Anil Ravipudi is perhaps the only star director who makes films at a breakneck speed. Most filmmakers who made their debut after 2010 are notoriously slow – in fact, their slowness has no justification. At least Rajamouli’s delays are defensible.
