Southwest monsoon to retreat by October 16: IMD

Southwest monsoon to retreat by October 16 IMD

The India Meteorological Department on Tuesday predicted that the southwest monsoon will withdraw from the country by October 16.

This is in line with the usual schedule of the monsoon retreating around October 15, The Indian Express reported.

The India Meteorological Department announces the withdrawal of the monsoon based on three factors: no rainfall activity over the region for five continuous days, a considerable reduction in moisture content and an anticyclonic circulation in the lower levels of the atmosphere.

The weather agency added that the onset of northeast monsoon, or winter monsoon, was expected over east peninsular India in the next two days.

It issued a heavy rain warning for Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry’s Mahé town till October 20, adding that south-interior Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and the Yanam and Rayalaseema regions will likely receive heavy rain till Thursday, The Indian Express reported.

This year, India recorded its fifth wettest monsoon since 2001, with 937.2 mm of rainfall between June and September, which was 8% above average.
