Design and Display: Tradition Meets Innovation
The Xperia 1 VII retains Sony’s signature design language, which includes practical elements like visible bezels, multiple physical buttons, including a two-stage shutter key, and a 3.5mm headphone jack, an increasingly rare feature in modern flagships. While many brands strive for a bezel-less design, Sony maintains a distinct look that prioritizes utility over trends.
The phone is slightly taller and wider than its predecessor, the Xperia 1 VI. The 1 VII features a 6.5-inch Full HD+ HDR OLED display with a cinematic 19.5:9 aspect ratio. Supporting a variable refresh rate from 1Hz to 120Hz and a 240Hz touch sampling rate, the display ensures smooth interactions and dynamic visuals. Sony has also added a rear RGBW light sensor to adjust brightness and tone based on ambient lighting, making it the company’s brightest Xperia screen ever. The panel, tuned by the BRAVIA TV division, brings excellent colour accuracy and contrast levels, ideal for infotainment and creation alike.
The phone has both IP65 and IP68 ratings for dust and water resistance, with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection on the front and Gorilla Glass Victus protection on the back. The phone still features a side-mounted fingerprint sensor.
Performance and Battery Life: Powerful and Efficient
Under the hood, the Xperia 1 VII is equipped with the new Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform, tailored specifically for high performance and gaming. This is paired with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage, with a microSD slot supporting expansion up to 2TB, another rarity among flagship phones.
To manage heat, especially during 4K recording or gaming, Sony has employed a vapor chamber cooling system. The device maintains stable performance during prolonged usage, which is crucial for creators and gamers.
Powering the device is a 5,000mAh battery. Sony claims up to two days of battery life under typical use. Charging is supported at 30W via USB PD, and also wirelessly through Qi charging. Intelligent features like Xperia Adaptive Charging and Battery Care help extend battery lifespan by preventing overcharging and excessive heat buildup. Sony estimates less than 20% battery degradation over a four-year period, highlighting a major focus on longevity.
Professional-Grade Photography in Your Pocket
The Xperia 1 VII’s camera system continues Sony’s pursuit of blending Alpha camera technologies into smartphones. The primary camera features a 48 MP Exmor T sensor with Zeiss optics, delivering a 24mm equivalent focal length and optical image stabilization. It is designed to handle high dynamic range scenarios and offer superior light sensitivity, particularly in low-light environments.
Complementing this is a redesigned ultra-wide 48 MP camera, sporting a 1/1.56 inch sensor, 2.1 times larger than its predecessor. With a 16mm focal length and f/2.0 aperture, it not only improves edge distortion but also enables detailed macro shots as close as 5cm. This makes it one of the most capable ultra-wide cameras on any smartphone.
The telephoto unit is a 12 MP periscope lens with a continuously variable zoom ranging from 85mm to 170mm, equating to roughly 3.5x to 7.1x optical zoom. This allows for high-quality zoom shots without considerable loss in details.
Sony has also integrated a host of AI-powered enhancements. Features like Real-Time Eye Autofocus for both humans and animals, AI-driven white balance, and subject recognition ensure sharp and properly exposed images. New tools such as “AI Camera Work” and “Auto Framing” offer vloggers and solo content creators intelligent framing and stabilization during video recording. All three lenses support 4K 120 FPS video, making Xperia 1 VII a serious tool for mobile cinematography.
Audio Experience: A Nod to WALKMAN Heritage
Sony has utilized its WALKMAN expertise to create an unmatched audio experience on the Xperia 1 VII. Internally, the phone uses a redesigned analog audio circuit and a high-performance audio IC that improves signal-to-noise ratio. Gold-plated soldering further reduces transmission loss for the 3.5mm jack, a nod to audiophiles who prefer wired listening.
The phone supports high-resolution audio formats like 360 Reality Audio, Dolby Atmos, and LDAC, along with DSEE Ultimate upscaling for compressed audio. It also allows audio tuning for different environments using the “360 Reality Audio Upmix” feature, turning stereo sources into immersive soundscapes.
Dual front-facing stereo speakers provide symmetrical sound output, and Bluetooth connectivity supports the latest codecs for seamless wireless playback. It is a true multimedia machine, not just for watching but listening as well.
Software and Availability
Out of the box, the Xperia 1 VII will run on Android 15, offering a clean, near-stock experience enhanced by Sony’s pro-grade camera and audio apps. Recognizing the growing importance of long-term support, Sony promises four major Android OS updates and six years of security patches. This places the Xperia 1 VII among the best-supported Android phones on the market.
The phone includes Sony’s custom apps for creators, such as “Photo Pro,” “Video Pro,” and “Music Pro,” allowing granular control over every aspect of capture and playback. These apps emulate professional Sony Alpha and WALKMAN interfaces, ensuring familiarity for existing users of Sony’s ecosystem.
