Snapdragon 8s Elite chip tipped to arrive soon; first phones in April

In the last couple of years, Qualcomm has made some important changes to its product nomenclature. While the company’s chip names and lineups used to be fairly clear, they are now almost as confusing as MediaTek’s. One of the changes was the creation of “Snapdragon s” chips in both the high-end and mid-range segments. A new leak claims that Qualcomm is about to launch the Snapdragon 8s Elite chip.

What are “Snapdragon s” chips?

For starters, “Snapdragon s” chips are alternative versions of existing models. However, don’t be fooled by the name. While most in the tech industry typically use an “S” to denote that the product is an improved version, Qualcomm does the opposite. Actually, “Snapdragon s” chips are weaker versions of their “non-s” counterparts. The company introduced the first “s” chips in its Snapdragon 7 series and 6 series. However, last year, Qualcomm launched the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 as a “pseudo flagship” SoC.

Since the company changed the name of its flagship chips, the next “pseudo flagship” product will also have a different name to match. Instead of being called the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4, it’s expected to be called the Snapdragon 8s Elite. Considering its predecessor arrived in March 2024, it was logical to think that a new model was imminent.

First Snapdragon 8s Elite-powered phones could arrive as early as April

According to tipster Yogesh Brar on X/Twitter, the Snapdragon 8s Elite “is set to launch soon.” While there’s no specific date, he claims we’ll see the first Snapdragon 8s Elite-powered devices in April. The leaker even asserts that “plenty of phones” will feature it.

Sadly, there are no details regarding the chipset’s tech specs. Last year’s model was powerful, but Qualcomm made a rather odd move by also releasing a mid-range Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 chip that was quite similar in power and specs—with a few differences. We’ll have to wait and see if Qualcomm follows the same strategy this time.

In related news, Qualcomm recently announced the Snapdragon G series. These chips are aimed at handheld consoles, so they won’t add any confusion to the phone SoC catalog.
