Six patients killed in fire at state run Jaipur hospital

Six patients were killed in a fire at the state-run Sawai Man Singh Hospital in Jaipur on Sunday night, PTI reported.

Those who died were critical patients in the hospital’s trauma centre.

Dr Anurag Dhakad, who is in charge of the trauma centre, said that 11 patients were being treated in the Neuro Intensive Care Unit when the fire erupted in the storage area, the news agency reported.

A suspected short circuit is believed to have caused the fire, he was quoted as saying.

Fourteen other patients were admitted in a different intensive care unit and were evacuated, Dhakad said.

Equipment in the intensive care unit, blood sample tubes, documents and other items stored in the area were burnt in the fire.

Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma ordered an investigation into the cause of the fire, the hospital management’s response and the firefighting arrangements at the trauma centre, ANI reported.

The committee will also look into the safety and evacuation of patients in the event of a fire, and the measures to protect the hospital from such fires in the future and prevent recurrence.

Sharma said that all steps are being taken to ensure the safety of patients, their treatment and the care of those affected in the incident.
