Six killed after landslide buries two houses in Mandi


A landslide triggered by heavy rains on Tuesday killed six persons and buried two houses in the Sundernagar area of Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district, The Indian Express reported.

Five of those who died were identified as Gurpreet Singh, his wife Bharti, their daughter Kirat, Shanti Devi and Surender Kaur, The New Indian Express reported. The sixth victim reportedly was an unidentified man who was passing by on a two-wheeler when the debris hit.

More casualties are feared as rescue operations are underway, officials said.

“Teams from the police, State Disaster Response Force and National Disaster Response Force are working round the clock to clear the debris,” The Indian Express quoted Mandi Deputy Commissioner Apoorv Devgan as saying. “As a precautionary measure, two adjacent houses have been evacuated, one of which sustained partial damage.”

In another incident, a landslide struck a residential area in Kullu’s inner Akhara Bazaar late on Tuesday night, damaging a house and leaving two persons feared trapped, The New Indian Express reported.

The state has witnessed heavy rains for the last few days.

During this year’s monsoon, there have been 182 deaths in rain-related incidents and 159 fatalities in road accidents in Himachal Pradesh, ANI quoted State Disaster Management Authority as saying on Wednesday.

The rain-related fatalities include 23 deaths in landslides, nine in flash floods, 17 in cloudbursts, 33 in drowning, 14 in electrocution, among others.

This August was the wettest in Himachal Pradesh in 76 years, with the state recording 431.3 mm of rain, the highest since 1949, according to the Shimla Meteorological Department, The Hindu reported.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has issued a fresh alert for more intense rain in the next 16-18 hours in the state.

Extremely heavy showers are likely in Chamba, Kangra, Kullu and Mandi districts, while Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti, Shimla, Sirmaur, Solan and Una may also see heavy to very heavy rainfall.

Punjab: Schools, colleges shut till September 7

In Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday ordered all schools and colleges in the state to remain shut till September 7 in view of heavy rains.

On Tuesday, the state government declared all 23 districts flood-hit and activated emergency measures under the Disaster Management Act, 2025, The Tribune reported.

Twenty-nine persons have died in Punjab in the last one month as the state witnesses the worst floods in nearly four decades.

The recent floods in the state have submerged around 2.32 lakh acres of farmland, primarily paddy fields, and impacted more than 2.56 lakh persons in 12 of the 23 districts, according to an official bulletin released on Monday.

This came as the state recorded 253.7 mm of rainfall in August, which is 74% above normal and the highest in 25 years.

Delhi: Yamuna flowing over danger mark

A flood warning was issued in Delhi on Wednesday after incessant rain pushed the Yamuna river above the danger mark, The Indian Express reported.

More than 7,500 people have been reportedly evacuated from low-lying areas.

At 1 pm, the water level at the Old Railway Bridge rose to 207 metres. According to flood control norms, the warning level for the Yamuna is 204.50 metres, the danger level is 205.33 metres, and evacuations are ordered once the river crosses 206 metres.

In July 2023, the Yamuna had reached an all-time high of 208.6 metres, breaching embankments and flooding several areas along the river.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rain across parts of Delhi on Wednesday.
