The Pune police arrested the secretary of the Servants of India Society (SIS) on Saturday evening on charges of fraud and misappropriation of funds. The society, which runs the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE), has been at the centre of a storm after Sanjeev Sanyal was recently removed and then reinstated as the chancellor.
Girisha Nimbalkar, Inspector, Deccan Police Station, told The Indian Express, “Deputy registrar of Gokhale Institute, Vishal Gaikwaid, has filed a complaint of fraud, misappropriation, and cheating of Rs 1.5 crore against SIS secretary Milind Deshmukh. He was arrested last evening.”
Atmanand Mishra, Vice President, SIS, who had previously accused Deshmukh and SIS President Damodar Sahoo of mismanagement of the institute, said, “Under these circumstances whereby the Gokhale Institute in Pune has been defamed, I feel the President should not allow Deshmukh to continue as a member. I have no personal enmity with him, but now the case will go to court, and what if more scandals come up?”
Despite numerous attempts, Sahoo did not respond to calls for comment.
