Veteran actor Govardhan Asrani, popularly known as Asrani, has passed away at the age of 84. His nephew confirmed the news. The actor breathed his last at around 4 PM on October 20 after suffering from a prolonged illness.

He further revealed that Asrani had told his wife Manju not to make his death into an event, and it was the family’s wish to hold the funeral swiftly. “This is why the family only spoke about his passing away after the funeral was conducted,” he continued. A prayer meeting is likely to be planned.

Asrani had a career spanning over five decades, in which he had been a part of 350 films. He was best known for his comic roles, especially for playing the role of the jailer in Sholay. Asrani made his debut in 1967 with the film Hare Kaanch Ki Choodiyan. In the same year, he also featured in a Gujarati film. Asrani kept working in Gujarati films for the next couple of years, following which, his advisor Hrishikesh Mukherjee gave him the role of a supporting actor in Satyakam (1969).

The actor married actress Manju Bansal, with whom he worked in films such as Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar and Namak Haram. After their marriage, they acted in more films such as Tapasya, Chandi Sona, Jaan-E-Bahaar, and Jurmana, among many others.
