The second newborn baby who was bitten by rats at the Maharaja Yeshwant Rao Hospital in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore died on Wednesday, The Indian Express reported.
This was the second fatality after rat bites at the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit in the past 24 hours. Another infant who had been bitten by rats died at the institution on Tuesday. The hospital attributed her death to pneumonia, and not the rat bite.

In the second case as well, Jitendra Verma, the deputy superintendent of the hospital, claimed that the baby girl died not because of the rat bite but because of septicemia. She had been suffering from multiple congenital anomalies, the official said.
“Seven days earlier, our surgeons had operated on her,” Verma told The Indian Express. “She had contracted septicemia and her condition was very critical. Despite our best efforts, she passed away this afternoon.”
The second child weighed only 1.6 kilograms and was on a ventilator in the intensive care unit, the hospital said.
The baby’s family said that they did not want a post-mortem examination, as they knew about her critical health condition, The Indian Express reported.
In the case of the first baby, the hospital had said that her parents had abandoned her, and that officials had informed the police about the matter.
Indore’s Chief Medical and Health Officer Madhav Hasani did not respond to calls or messages from Scroll.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said that the government “will not tolerate any negligence”, and added that he had instructed the collector and the health department to look into the matter, ANI reported. “I have also asked the Health Minister to take action on this,” he said.

The Congress, however, sought the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla, who holds the health portfolio, the Hindustan Times reported.
“The health minister should have resigned after this incident,” Madhya Pradesh Congress spokesperson KK Mishra said. “It’s not only the nursing staff and a few doctors but the entire system is responsible for the death of two infants.”
