Scroll’s Rokibuz Zaman on Saturday won the Human Rights and Religious Freedom Young Journalist Award 2025.

The honour was part of the annual Human Rights and Religious Freedom Journalism Awards that were announced by the Indian American Muslim Council, an advocacy group based in Washington.

In a press note, the advocacy group said that the awards recognise outstanding reporting that amplifies urgent issues of human rights, religious freedom and solidarity in India, and among its diaspora.

“The 2025 awards honoured journalists across five categories, highlighting their courage, rigor, and commitment to truth in the face of rising threats to press freedom,” it said. “This year, we received more than 250 entries across six categories.”

Akanksha Kumar, as part of Newslaundry and Article 14, won in the Best Text Reporting on Human Rights & Religious Freedom (English) category for her series on fake police encounters and criminalisation of Muslims in Haryana.

Scroll’s Nolina Minj was a finalist in this category.

The Best Reporting on Human Rights & Religious Freedom (Hindi) was won by BBC Hindi’s Umang Poddar for his reportage on the 2020 Delhi riots, while Vikhar Ahmed Sayeed and the Frontline Magazine won Best Story on Human Solidarity for their documentary Together We Sing’.

The Best Video Story on Human Rights and Religious Freedom was won by ABC News’ Meghna Bali, Bhat Burhan and Mohammad Sartaj Alam for Hindu nationalists block Christian funerals in India.

The Quint’s Aditya Menon, Aliza Noor, Syed Faheem Ahmed, Ashutosh Singh, Naman Shah and Zijah Sherwani were honoured with the Human Rights and Religious Freedom Journalism Award (Special Mention) for Uncovering Hate: The Quint’s Tracker.
