SC directs EC to accept Aadhaar for voter roll revision

The Supreme Court has directed the Election Commission to accept the Aadhaar card as the 12th document to establish identity for inclusion in Bihar’s revised electoral roll. It was not among the 11 documents that the poll panel had initially listed to be included on the roll. This had drawn criticism from petitioners, who described the decision as being “absurd” because it is a document that is most prevalant.

On Monday, the top court said that while an Aadhaar card can be produced as a valid proof of identity, it is not proof of citizenship. It also directed the poll panel to verify the authenticity of the Aadhaar cards submitted. Read more.


Fourteen persons have been killed and more than 50 injured in Nepal’s Kathmandu after protests against a government ban on social media platforms turned violent. Protesters tried to storm parliament and some briefly entered a restricted area, following which police fired tear gas, water cannons, rubber bullets and live ammunition.

The Nepali government had on Thursday banned 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, X and YouTube, saying they had failed to register with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology.

Among those injured during Monday’s protests are two journalists. Ten protesters are in a critical condition with gunshot wounds on the head and chest. Read on.


Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called United States President Donald Trump imposing tariffs on countries, including India, that continue to trade with Russia was a “right idea”. “We can’t have any deals if we want to stop them,” said Zelenskyy. “I think that President [Trump] wants to finish this war.”

This came a day after Trump said that he was ready to move to the “second phase” of sanctions on Russia, without elaborating on details.

A Lucknow court has directed that a complaint case be registered against Aaj Tak anchor Anjana Om Kashyap for an episode of her show that aired on August 14. The episode was titled “Bharat vibhajan ka maksad pura kyun nahi hua?”, or why the purpose of India’s Partition was not fulfilled.

The complaint was filed by former Indian Police Service officer Amitabh Thakur, who alleged that the episode was made with the sole purpose of creating a division between two major religious communities.

He claimed that the caption for the episode on social media platforms read: “Out of 4 crore Muslims, only 96 lakh went to Pakistan! Why was the purpose of India’s Partition not fulfilled?” Read on.


Sankarshan Thakur, the editor of The Telegraph and a political author, has died at the age of 63. Thakur held senior editorial roles at The Telegraph, The Indian Express, and Tehelka. He was conferred with the Prem Bhatia Award in 2001 and the Appan Menon Fellowship in 2003.

Thakur authored several political biographies, including Subaltern Saheb about Bihar’s former Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav and Single Man: The Life and Times of Nitish Kumar of Bihar and The Brothers Bihari, which explored the lives and politics of both Yadav and Kumar. Read on.
