Saturn’s iconic ice and rock rings to disappear this weekend: Here’s why | Technology News

Saturn’s rings, which are primarily made of ice and rocks, will disappear from view this weekend. The phenomenon, dubbed “ring plane crossing” usually occurs every 13 to 15 years with the planet’s rings perfectly aligning with Earth’s line of sight, causing them to go nearly invisible.

Once these rings disappear, Saturn will appear as a pale yellow sphere when viewed via the majority of telescopes, but the most powerful telescopes will still show a line that will be visible around the planet’s middle part.

The fleeting phenomenon will be taking place on Sunday (March 23) at 9:34 PM IST. However, it will be hard to watch this time. According to Space.com, for those living in mid-northern latitudes, Saturn will appear pretty close to the pre-dawn sun while those in mid-southern latitudes will will have the best chances to see the planet without rings, but they will have to fight against morning twilight over the eastern horizon.

Saturn completes one orbit around the Sun every 29.4 Earth years. As the planet rotates on an axis at 27 degrees, sometimes the rings are tiled, which is when observers on Earth get a good view of them. In case you were wondering, Saturn’s rings stretch across 2,73,600 kilometers but are only 10 meters or 30 feet thick. When the planet is tilted towards us, we see the upper side of the rings but when they are away from us, we see the lower side.
