Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and a resolute Al-Qadisiyah side stood tall against Cristiano Ronaldo and Al-Nassr as the two sides met in the Saudi Pro League on Friday. Despite the hosts Al-Qadisiyah being winless in their last four matches (2 wins, 2 draws), a surprising result against title contenders Al-Nassr has left Cristiano Ronaldo’s side debilitated in terms of getting their hands on the Saudi Pro League title.
Surprisngly, Al-Nassr is yet to claim a League title ever since Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival in 2023. Adding to the fact that the Faris Najd last ended the League season on top back in the 2018/19 campaign, the Portuguese superstar is yet to inspire his team to success. In a rather lacklustre display away from home, Al-Nassr, led by Ronaldo, Sadio Mane and Jhon Duran in attack, only managed to force two goalkeeper saves out of their opponents. Ronaldo in particular, failed to make a single shot on target in the game.
Former Arsenal and Barcelona man Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang played a role in both the goals scored by the hosts. His driven shot towards Bento in the 35th minute was saved and fell invitingly for teammate Turki Al-Ammar, who made no mistake to convert from point blank range. Sadio Mane then pulled his back into the game late in the 84th minute. As the game headed to a 1-1 draw, up stepped Aubameyang to break Al-Nassr hearts. The striker’s weighted header into the Al-Nassr goal in the 87th minute sealed their fate, sending Al-Nassr back home with nothing to show for their efforts.
As things stand in the Saudi Pro League, Al-Nassr are four points below rivals Al-Hilal and eight points below League leaders Al-Ittihad. With just six games left to go, it is difficult to see how Al-Nassr will overcome an eight point deficit to claim the League crown. Ronaldo, despite a poor showing, remains top scorer in the competition with 23 goals to his name.
