How big of a concern is Rohit Sharma’s form at the top of the order for the Mumbai Indians? If you go by their batting coach Kieron Pollard, then not much at all, as the former MI all-rounder was bullish in his defence of the opener. But the numbers suggest otherwise.
So far in IPL 2025, the former MI captain has scored 21 runs off the 20 balls he has faced (0 vs CSK, 8 vs GT, and 13 vs KKR). In IPL 2024, he had decent overall numbers of 417 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 150, but those stats get skewed by the 105* off 63 balls he scored at the Wankhede Stadium against CSK (plus another 68 in the last match of the league phase as MI finished last). Between those two knocks, his scores last year read: 36, 6, 8, 4, 11, 4, 19. A year further back, in IPL 2023, 332 runs at a strike rate of 132.8 and in 2022, it was further down at 268 runs at 120.18. There is a sufficient case to be made for the fact that he has not been in good batting form for MI over the course of a full season, for a while now.
But Pollard said a turnaround was imminent. “Rohit has etched his name in history, in record books, in different situations, in different formats of the game. He is a legend of the game. So, let’s not judge him on a couple of low scores,” Pollard said ahead of MI’s away match against Lucknow Super Giants on Friday. “There are times when you will have a couple of low scores. As an individual, he is enjoying his cricket and not being pressurised in certain situations. I am sure we will be singing his praises when he comes and he gives us that big score and then we will be on to the next hot topic.”
Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar, however, sees cause for concern. “He is clearly going through a phase,” Manjrekar is quoted as saying to JioStar after MI’s 2nd match. “He’s not the Rohit Sharma of, say, three to four years ago. He’s at a stage in his career where he has to push himself every morning – train hard and be at his best – because things are slipping away for him. He’s still relying on his natural talent and instincts.”
