Rohan Kanawades award winning film set for an India release

Rohan Kanawade’s acclaimed Sabar Bonda is finally coming home to India. The Marathi drama, about the taboo relationship between two men in rural Maharashtra, was premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January. Sabar Bonda (Cactus Pears) went on to win the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic at the festival – the first Indian feature to do so.

Kanawade’s feature debut stars Bhushaan Manoj, Suraaj Suman, and Jayshri Jagtap in key roles. Sabar Bonda will be distributed in India by Rana Daggubati’s Spirit Media on September 19 – well ahead of the selection of India’s Oscar entry.

In an interview with Scroll in January, Kanawade spoke of his hardscrabble background and the challenges he faced to make Sabar Bonda: “My father worked as a driver for most of his life. Despite his problems, he supported me when I said I wanted to be a filmmaker – whatever you do, do it passionately, he said.”
