Richa Chadha says math of Bollywood business doesn’t allow filmmakers to take chance on newcomers: ‘When a big star’s film flop…’ | Bollywood News

Many filmmakers, including Anurag Kashyap and Hansal Mehta, have pointed out that the Hindi film industry is struggling. They have also highlighted how, in a time of fewer hits, producers are reluctant to take chances on new talent. Now, actor Richa Chadha, who recently produced the critically acclaimed Girls Will Be Girls and introduced fresh talent, has addressed the issue.

In a recent interaction, Richa acknowledged that while aspiring actors today have social media to showcase their talent, filmmakers are increasingly hesitant to cast newcomers. Speaking to Hindustan Times, she said, “We should give more chances to newcomers, but it’s very sad that even established filmmakers in Bollywood tend to stereotype actors. I can say that from my personal experience. Somewhere, the math of the business doesn’t allow us to take chances. And it’s not only limited to the actors but filmmakers as well.”

Richa further argued that with even big-star films underperforming, the industry is becoming more risk-averse. “When a big film with a big star flops, everyone wants to become safer and safer. They want to have an item song and a certain number of action sequences. But over time, you realise that innovation is the heart of any industry,” she said.

She pointed to the South Indian film industry as an example of how to sustain success. She said, “We can learn from them. We can learn what happens when a big actor takes a risk on a narrative.” Richa highlighted the South industry’s approach to keeping ticket prices affordable, which boosts footfall in theatres. She said, “They make sure that they make films for their own fans, they make sure the ticket prices are low, and they keep things affordable. Yahaan pe kuch ulta hota hai (Here everything is different). When a film is big and there is anticipation for it, people increase the ticket prices. Why am I, a new producer with only one film and who is basically an actor, having to say this to the media? The big stakeholders should be looking at this.”
