A 65-year-old retired loco pilot died after he was attacked with a steel rod by an unidentified man during his routine evening walk in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar area on Thursday night.
Surendra Dhonduram Pachadkar, a resident of Triveni Society in Vikhroli (West), was found lying in a pool of blood inside CGS Colony around 9.30 pm, police said on Friday.
According to officers, he lived with his wife Shubhangi and 34-year-old stepson, Akash Sathe. Pachadkar, who had recently retired as a loco pilot, suffered from diabetes and kidney-related ailments and had been advised to walk every day.
On Thursday evening, he left home at 7.30 pm for his routine walk.
Around 9.44 pm, Sathe received a call from the victim’s phone informing him that an elderly man had been found injured in the area. When he rushed to the spot with his mother, police had already shifted Pachadkar to Zainova Hospital, where he died during treatment shortly after midnight.
An eyewitness, 75-year-old Nilabai Muralidhar Shinde, later told police that she saw a young man attack the victim on the head with a steel rod. When she raised an alarm, the attacker fled.
The autopsy conducted at Rajawadi Hospital confirmed that Pachadkar died due to a severe head injury.
Police have registered a murder case under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against an unknown accused and are scanning CCTV footage and conducting inquiries in the locality to trace the attacker.
