Renault revealed the New Espace, featuring extensive styling updates, enhanced technology, and the brand’s efficient full hybrid powertrain. The vehicle maintains its spacious interior while offering new features focused on comfort and sustainability, Renault said.
The New Espace has received significant exterior changes with more than one-third of its body components replaced, including the entire front end, hood, tailgate, and rear lights. The vehicle sports a new light signature with half-diamond daytime running lights and trapezoidal headlights featuring adaptive LED technology, with matrix LED vision available as an option.
The rear design incorporates tangram puzzle-inspired light elements that appear as floating grey ice cubes when turned off and glow red when activated. New high-gloss black blades integrated with the door protection create a sportier profile while protecting the rear wing from debris.
The vehicle continues to offer a large interior space with seating for five or seven passengers. The second-row bench seat slides over 22 cm with four recline angles, while the third row in the 7-seater version can be folded individually into the boot floor.
New features include the largest Solarbay opacifying glass roof in the Renault range, measuring almost 2 square meters without a cross member. The roof’s nine segments can switch between transparent and opaque modes via a switch or voice command using Google Assistant.
Front seats have been redesigned for better lateral and shoulder support, the company said, with new upholstery options including the 98% recycled “Egée” fabric on the Techno trim. The Iconic trim offers a choice of Titanium Black or Light Sand Grey refined textile upholstery.
Technology Enhancements
The New Espace introduces a driver recognition system that uses a camera in the left A-pillar to identify the driver and activate personalized settings including favorite media stations, driving position, and Google apps. This feature stores data in the vehicle rather than sending it to external servers.
The infotainment system features an OpenR 24-inch twin screen that can be combined with an optional 9.3-inch head-up display. The OpenR link multimedia system includes Google services such as Maps, Assistant, and Play with over 50 apps.
A new safety application called “Take a Break!” uses the A-pillar camera to detect driver fatigue by monitoring eye closure, blinking frequency, and yawning, alerting the driver when rest is necessary.
Hybrid Powertrain and Performance
The New Espace comes with a full hybrid E-Tech 200 hp powertrain that combines a 3-cylinder 1.2-liter turbocharged petrol engine (130 hp, 205 Nm) with two electric motors. The main electric motor delivers 70 hp and 205 Nm of torque, powered by a 2 kWh/400V lithium-ion battery, while a secondary high-voltage starter generator manages gear changes.
This powertrain, already compliant with the future Euro 6 Bis emissions standard, achieves fuel consumption of 4.8 liters/100 km and CO₂ emissions of 108g per km, providing a range of up to 1,100 kilometers without charging.
The intelligent automatic gearbox selects from multiple operating modes: all-electric, dynamic hybrid, e-drive, combustion, and energy recovery. Performance figures include 0-100 km/h acceleration in 8.8 seconds and 80-120 km/h in 6 seconds.
The 4Control Advanced 4-wheel steering system, standard on Esprit Alpine and Iconic trims, enhances maneuverability by turning the rear wheels slightly in the same direction as the front wheels at higher speeds and in the opposite direction at lower speeds, reducing the turning circle to 10.4 meters.
New Espace features 32 driving aids, including Active Driver Assist for level 2 autonomous driving, Safety Score, and Safety Coach. The My Safety Switch button allows drivers to activate preferred settings for five driving aids simultaneously.
The New Renault Espace will be available in three trim levels: Techno, Esprit Alpine, and Iconic. It will launch in several European markets before summer in Baltic Blue Grey, Midnight Blue, Pearl White, and Starry Black color options, with a satin-finish Schist Grey available for the Esprit Alpine trim.
