
​​Mumbai received heavy rainfall early on Monday, prompting the India Meteorological Department to issue a red alert for the city and its suburbs till Tuesday.
Residents have been advised to avoid stepping out unless necessary.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation announced that all schools and colleges in the city would be closed after noon on Monday.
Waterlogging was reported in several areas, slowing traffic on the Western Express Highway near Vile Parle and flooding Gandhi Market in Sion, ANI reported.
Other low-lying areas, such as Andheri Subway and Lokhandwala Complex, also saw water accumulation, disrupting traffic movement, according to PTI.
Suburban train services were delayed by 15 to 20 minutes.
Mumbai airport authorities issued an advisory, asking passengers to arrive early and check flight schedules with their respective airlines in view of the prevailing situation.

Yamuna crosses danger mark in Delhi
Meanwhile, the Yamuna river in Delhi crossed the danger mark of 205.33 metres on Monday, ANI reported.
According to flood control norms for the Yamuna, the warning level is 204.50 metres, the danger level is 205.33 metres and evacuations officially begin at 206 metres.
Authorities have begun evacuating residents from six low-lying districts, The Hindu reported. The Central Water Commission warned on Sunday that the water level could touch 206 metres by early Monday.
This came after all 18 gates of the Hathinikund Barrage in Haryana were opened for the first time this monsoon season, Hindustan Times reported.
Red alerts in Telangana, Andhra
The India Meteorological Department on Monday also issued a red alert for three districts in Telangana and placed one district under an orange alert, The Hindu reported.
Very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected in Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem and Mahabubabad districts, according to the agency’s Sunday bulletin.
Jayashankar Bhupalpally is under an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall, it added.
Separately, a red alert was also issued for several districts in North coastal Andhra Pradesh, forecasting very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, The New Indian Express reported.
The alert covers Visakhapatnam, Alluri Sitarama Raju, Anakapalle, Kakinada, East Godavari, Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema, Eluru, West Godavari, NTR and Guntur districts.
An orange alert is in place for Srikakulam, Parvathipuram Manyam, Vizianagaram, Krishna, Palnadu, Bapatla, Prakasam and Nandyal, while a yellow alert has been issued for SPSR Nellore, Kurnool, Anantapur, YSR Kadapa, Tirupati and Chittoor.
