Reconstitute Women’s Police Station: HC on custodial torture allegation | Kolkata News

The Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed the state administration to reconstitute the Paschim Medinipur Women’s Police Station in the wake of the allegations of torture of students who were detained during a protest on the Vidyasagar University campus.

Raising several questions, Justice Tirthankar Ghosh told state Advocate General Kishore Dutt, “The police station is not in order. Tell the DG to take action. Otherwise, I will be forced to give strict orders.” He further observed, “I have seen the CCTV footage. There is evidence of torture. It is not okay to torture by detaining or arresting someone. Ask them to reorganise that police station.”

On March 3, the women members of DSO and Students’ Federation of India (SFI) were allegedly assaulted by policemen during a protest on the Vidyasagar University campus in Paschim Medinipur over the Jadavpur University incident. The members of the Left student outfits alleged police brutality against female students while they were protesting outside the campus.
