RCB skipper Patidar on the side’s batting failure

While Royal Challengers Bengaluru suffered their third home defeat with a five-wicket loss against Punjab Kings at Chinnaswamy Stadium on Friday night, RCB captain Rajat Patidar believes the team needs to have a look at the batting unit first. The Bengaluru side could only reach a total of 95 runs in the first innings before Kings chased the target for the loss of five wickets in 12.1 overs. With rain delaying the match and the match being curtailed to 14 overs each, Patidar talked about the need of the batting unit doing better.

“Initially the pitch was sticking, and was two-paced. But I think we could have done far better as a batting unit. Partnerships are important in batting. We have been losing wickets in intervals. We left Padikkal (Devdutt Paddikal) out due to the conditions. Wicket was not that bad. It was under cover for a long time. It helped Punjab, and the way they bowled, credit goes to them. The bowling unit is doing pretty well. We have confidence in our bowling unit. Sometimes it clicks [the batting], sometimes it doesn’t. We’ll look at the batting unit first,” said Patidar while speaking post the loss.

Only two Bengaluru batsmen could cross the 10-run mark in their innings with Tim David playing an unbeaten knock of 50 runs off 26 balls while Patidar scored 23 runs. Royal Challengers Bengaluru had lost their first five wickets for 33 runs before they lost Patidar at a score of 41 in the eight over before impact player Manoj Bhandage too departed in the next over falling LBW to Marco Jensen. David then took the Bengaluru side to a total of 95 for 9 in 14 overs before Kings chased the target. “It didn’t feel so easy (On playing off the back foot). I had a chance to see what the pitch was doing so I could adapt. (On facing more deliveries) Look our coaching staff has built a squad for a certain reason, we’ve got batters for different reasons. I am happy I can contribute, but whatever the coaching staff asks, I am happy to do. I am happy I got to face more balls today but I won’t be asking any questions about my positions. We had to try and get some partnerships. Tonight was difficult. We had to manage the risk a little bit. I feel happy with how I played but I’d feel better having a drink after a nice win. I think it’s been tough because we’ve faced different conditions each time. Tonight it was under the covers. We haven’t had a grasp and played well on our home ground, that’s undeniable,” said David post the match.
