Rasha Thadani reveals how mom Raveena Tandon prepared her for Bollywood: ‘She would make me watch Rekha, Saroj Khan videos’

Raveena Tandon’s daughter Rasha Thadani ruled the internet when the music video of the song “Uyi Amma” from her debut film Azaad was released. While a section criticised the young actor for doing the suggestive song when she was all of 17, fans lauded her expressions and performance in the song — they even voted her to be better than any other star kid who has made their acting debut in recent times. In a recent interaction, Rasha opened up about her song going viral and how her mother trained her by making her watch the performances of veteran actors like Rekha and Sadhana.

Speaking to BBC Asian Network, Rasha recalled a moment when she realised that “Uyi Amma” had made her a household name. She remembered how, on her way home after the promotions of Azaad, she was recognised by a man on the street as the ‘Uyi Amma girl.’ “There was a poster of our film on the billboard, and I rolled down the window to click a photo of it. This man on the street came to me and yelled, ‘Arey ye toh Uyi Amma hai (She’s the Uyi Amma girl).’”

Rasha gave credit for her performance to her choreographer Bosco Martis. “He and his team really worked with me on the song. He’s a genius,” she said. Rasha also shared that her early training from her mother helped her nail the expressions in the music video. She revealed, “My mom knew I would become an actor. She would make me watch Rekha ji, Saroj Khan ji and Sadhana ji’s performances. She would break it down for me and tell me to note the expressions for certain moods. She really focused on teaching me the craft, rather than just asking me to watch for fun.” Rasha also fondly recalled watching Sadhana’s iconic song “Jhumka Gira Re”, which left her in awe.

Talking about the virality of her song and how she’s processing the newfound admiration and fame, she said, “I didn’t expect such a reaction. I am still processing it.”
