Rahul Gandhi on video of students eating midday meal on

Sharing a video of students in a school in Madhya Pradesh eating their midday meals on a newspaper, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Mohan Yadav should feel ashamed for nurturing “India’s future” in such a “pitiable state”.

The video was from a school in Hullpur village in Sheopur district’s Vijaypur block, NDTV reported on Thursday. Videos circulating online showed the students eating food, which is part of the midday meal scheme, served on newspapers spread on the ground.

The midday meal programme under the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman is a centrally-sponsored scheme that is aimed at providing nutritious meals to students enrolled in government and aided schools.

Sheopur District Collector Arpit Verma had ordered an inquiry by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate after the videos in Hullpur came to light, NDTV reported. After the inquiry confirmed the incident, the self-help group responsible for serving the meals was terminated and a show-cause notice was issued to the principal of the school.

On Saturday, Gandhi said on social media: “I am heading to Madhya Pradesh today. And ever since I saw this news that children there are being served mid-day meals on newspapers, my heart has broken.”

The leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha said that these were the “same innocent children on whose dreams the future of the country rests, and they are not even getting a plate of dignity”.

“Over 20 years of BJP [Bharatiya Janata Party] government [in the state], and they have stolen even the children’s plate – their ‘development’ is just an illusion, the real secret to coming to power is ‘the system’,” added Gandhi.
