Qualcomm has announced that it will kick off this year’s Snapdragon Summit on September 23. That’s when the company will unveil its next-gen flagship SoC, the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2. It’s worth noting that benchmark leaks have already suggested that the chipset will offer top-notch performance. Not to forget, we might also see the successor of the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 5, at the Summit. Interestingly, the performance of the Snapdragon 8s Gen 5 SoC could be on par with last year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC.
Fresh rumor hints at the Snapdragon 8s Gen 5 mimicking 8 Elite’s performance
The news comes from popular Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station (DCS). In a Weibo post, DCS claims that the unique designation number “SM8845” is linked to the Snapdragon 8s Gen 5. The tipster further claims that the Snapdragon 8s Gen 5 SoC will be built on TSMC’s 3nm “N3P” process. Additionally, it will come with in-house Oryon cores, mimicking the 8 Elite’s performance.
Since the Snapdragon 8s Gen 5 uses TSMC’s 3nm process, you can expect the SoC to deliver great efficiency. Just like Apple, Qualcomm could be using the chip binning technique to differentiate between the Snapdragon 8s Gen 5 and Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 SoCs.
What’s interesting is that the Snapdragon 8s Gen 5 will also feature multiple IP and GPU architectures related to the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2. The first device to pack the Snapdragon 8s Gen 5 could arrive by the end of 2025.
A trimmed-down version of the upcoming flagship SoC?
This simply makes the Snapdragon 8s Gen 5 a trimmed-down version of the upcoming flagship SoC. You can expect the tech giant to scale down some features to keep a gap between flagship and non-flagship SoCs. However, that difference could be minimal.
Honestly, these are quite big claims. However, given DCS’s strong track record with leaks and rumors, it’s worthwhile to consider these details for now.
