‘Psychologically, it’s a challenge’: Former Mumbai Indians bowling coach Shane Bond on Jasprit Bumrah’s comeback after injury | Ipl News

While the cricketing world awaits the return of Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah post a back injury, there have been talks that the 31-year-old can make a return to competitive cricket for Mumbai Indians in the ongoing Indian Premier League. Bumrah, who suffered back spasms during the Sydney Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy early this year, started bowling in the nets at NCA Bengaluru earlier this week. Former Mumbai Indians bowling coach and pacer Shane Bond believes that the Indian pace spearhead needs to take his time for the return to competitive cricket.

“Psychologically, it’s a challenge. I still had times when I played with my back really locked up, my muscles down my back would spasm. I always tell my players, take a week at the front end and that could save you six months at the back end. Spend a little bit longer in your preparation and your build-up because it will give you a better chance to stay on the field. Obviously from a Rajasthan Royals standpoint, I don’t really want to see Bumrah, but I do want to see him back on the field. I do hope they take it conservatively to give him the best chance to come back and come back for the next however long he wants to play,” Bond, who is now the bowling coach of Rajasthan Royals, told ESPNCricinfo.

Bumrah had first suffered a lower back stress fracture in 2019 and was sidelined for a major part of the year due to the injury. The Indian pacer again faced back issues in 2022, which also saw him missing the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup, before he underwent surgery in 2023. The Indian pacer then missed the World Test Championship final and the 2023 IPL and spent four months in rehabilitation at NCA Bengaluru before making his return to international cricket later in the year. In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy this year, Bumrah bowled a total of 151 overs before he suffered back spasms during the final Sydney Test. When asked about whether Bumrah should change his bowling action, Bond answered in negative. “I don’t think so. Jasprit Bumrah had the (2023) surgery, but he played all that (Australia) Test series, performing unbelievably. At the end of the day, he just bowled too much over a one-month period. And it hasn’t cracked, he hasn’t got a fracture, he is on the borderline of a fracture. But what India would have learned is, if you then look at a five-Test match series in England and they do the same thing, they are probably going to get the same result. So you can’t do that. You need a squad of bowlers where you can sort of pick and choose,” added Bond.

The New Zealand former pacer also believes that the Indian team management should not repeat the mistake of over bowling Bumrah in the five-match Test series in England later this year. “”But what India would have learned is, if you then look at a five-Test match series in England and they do the same thing, they are probably going to get the same result. So you can’t do that. You need a squad of bowlers where you can sort of pick and choose. Because if you lose him, you have got T20 World Cups, you’ve got 50-overs World Cups and he’s an important member across all formats, IPL, all that sort of stuff,” said Bond.
