Praj Industries and Thyssenkrupp Uhde Partner for Polylactic Acid Production

Praj Industries Limited (PIL) and Thyssenkrupp Uhde’s polymer specialists, Uhde Inventa-Fischer (UIF), have announced a strategic partnership to provide an integrated technology for the production of Polylactic Acid (PLA). The partnership combines PIL’s expertise in industrial biotechnology with UIF’s chemical engineering capabilities to ensure efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable PLA manufacturing.

The collaboration addresses the environmental concerns associated with fossil-based plastics, particularly single-use plastics. PLA serves as a biodegradable alternative, supporting the transition to a circular bioeconomy. The integrated technology covers the entire PLA production process, from feedstock conversion to polymer production, enabling the manufacture of different lactic acid grades for food and industrial applications.

Dr. Pramod Chaudhari, Founder Chairman of Praj Industries, stated, “Praj’s Bioprism portfolio for renewable chemicals and materials, with a focus on bioplastics, underscores our commitment to a sustainable future. Our strategic partnership with Uhde marks a significant step toward driving the global shift to a circular economy through cost-effective biomanufacturing and biorefineries.”

Praj Industries has reinforced its biopolymer research by establishing a Centre of Excellence and Innovation for Biopolymers in collaboration with ICT Mumbai. Additionally, it inaugurated India’s first ‘Demonstration Facility for Biopolymers’ near Pune to produce lactic acid and lactide, supporting testing and validation for sustainable biopolymer solutions.

Nadja Håkansson, CEO of thyssenkrupp Uhde, commented, “We see a perfect match of two world-leading technologies: Uhde’s PLAneo process can now be offered as an integrated solution with Praj Industries’ lactic acid production. Together, we can design and deliver complete PLA plants. Our joint vision is a competitive solution to replace conventional plastics with sustainable alternatives.”

The partnership’s global presence allows it to serve diverse industries, including packaging, textiles, and hygiene supplies, with a wide range of PLA grades. The technology is adaptable to various agricultural feedstocks, including second-generation raw materials. Both companies claim to emphasize sustainability, aiming to develop environmentally responsible solutions for long-term impact.
