Pope Francis to be released from hospital on Sunday, set for first public appearance | World News

Pope Francis will be released from Gemelli Hospital on Sunday after spending 38 days battling double pneumonia, doctors confirmed. The 88-year-old pontiff, who was admitted on February 14, suffered multiple respiratory crises but has since stabilised.

Dr. Sergio Alfieri, Gemelli’s medical director, said Francis will need at least two months of rest and rehabilitation at the Vatican. The Argentine pope, who has chronic lung disease, faced severe complications, including anaemia, low blood platelets, and early kidney failure, but recovered after two blood transfusions.

Despite serious setbacks, including inhaling vomit and requiring mechanical ventilation, Francis remained conscious and cooperative. Over the past two weeks, his condition has improved, and he no longer needs nighttime ventilation or high-flow oxygen.

In a sign of his recovery, Francis will deliver a blessing from his hospital suite on Sunday morning, marking his first live appearance since admission. This hospitalisation has been the longest of his papacy.
