
Wanted gangster Anuj Kanaujia was killed in an exchange of fire during a joint operation by UP STF and Jharkhand Police in Jamshedpur on intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.
Kanaujia, 42, who was from UP’s Mau district, had 24 criminal cases against him. He worked as a contract killer for different criminal groups, including that of gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari, the police said.
ADGP (Law and Order and STF) Amitabh Yash said, “Kanaujia, a key sharpshooter of the Mukhtar Ansari gang, was neutralised after exchange of heavy gunfire between the police and the gangster. The police recovered two pistols—one 9mm and one .32 bore — from him.”
DSP D K Shahi sustained injuries during the encounter, it is learnt. STF claimed after they tracked down Kanaujia and his associates at a house in Jamshedpur, he refused to surrender and opened fire and hurled bombs at their team. The police fired back, injuring him, they said. Doctors were called who declared him dead.
