Non-Bailable Warrants

Hyderabad, July 6: In a major crackdown aimed at expediting long-pending cases and easing the burden on courts, the Rachakonda Police have successfully executed 2,847 non-bailable warrants (NBWs) within a span of just 30 days.

The special drive began after the number of pending NBWs in the commissionerate rose dramatically from 1,088 at the start of the year to 2,847 by the end of April. Determined to address the backlog, the police launched a month-long intensive operation in June.

Nine special teams were formed to locate and arrest the accused within the state, while additional squads were sent to trace offenders across state lines in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan. By June 30, 2,024, NBWs were executed through the physical production of the accused in court, while 823 warrants were returned to the respective courts with requests for further legal procedures.

Significantly, 1,408 long-pending warrants issued before 2023 were cleared. The operation also documented 52 deceased warrantees, and 14 individuals already in jail were identified, with their warrants regularised in court records.

In addition, 13 absconding accused who had fled during the course of their trials were tracked down and produced before the courts. The police also arrested four persons wanted in narcotics-related cases, accelerating pending trials in those instances.

What Are Non-Bailable Warrants?

A non-bailable warrant (NBW) is issued by a criminal court under Section 76 of the BNSS and Section 74 of the CrPC when an accused fails to appear in court, is evading arrest, or when the court is convinced that their presence cannot be secured through a bailable warrant. It empowers the police to arrest the individual and produce them before the court without the option of immediate bail.

The Rachakonda Police’s intensive NBW clearance operation reflects a proactive commitment to justice and improved judicial efficiency, setting a benchmark for other jurisdictions across the country.
