Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not attend Russia’s Victory Day celebrations in Moscow next month, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed Wednesday. “India will not be represented at the highest level,” he said, news agency PTI reported.
The report further citing local media stated that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh may attend the May 9 event in Modi’s place. Russian President Vladimir Putin had invited both Modi and China’s Xi Jinping to witness the Red Square parade. Xi has confirmed his participation.
Russia is preparing to host about 20 foreign leaders for the event marking the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany.
“On the banks of the Volga, our troops halted and crushed the enemy… a decisive blow was delivered to the Nazi war machine… whose 80th anniversary we will solemnly celebrate very soon, on May 9,” Putin said Tuesday.
