Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the National Democratic alliance, under the leadership of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, will script a “record-breaking” victory in the upcoming Assembly elections in the state. This was the first time that the prime minister endorsed the Janata Dal (United) chief as the alliance’s chief ministerial candidate.
Earlier in the day, Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav alleged that Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the BJP did not want to make Kumar the chief minister again.
He was referring to Shah’s statement from October 17, when he said that while the NDA was contesting the elections under Kumar’s leadership, the decision about the next chief minister would be taken after the polls.
Yadav was named as the Mahagathbandan’s chief ministerial candidate on Thursday.
The Assembly polls are due to be held in two phases on November 6 and November 11, while the votes will be counted on November 14. Read on.
The polling for four Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu and Kashmir, which have been vacant since 2021 took place on Friday. A day earlier, People’s Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti announced that her party will support three out of four of the ruling National Conference’s candidates.
She expressed hope that, in turn, her party will receive support for its private member bills in the ongoing Assembly session.
The Congress also extended its support to the four National Conference candidates.
Mubarak Gul, the National Conference’s chief whip said on Friday that the party was “very grateful” to the Congress, People’s Democratic Party and other allied partners for extending their support.
“We will win all four seats,” he further asserted.

At least 20 persons have been killed after a bus caught fire following a collision in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district. Of the 41 persons on board, 21 were rescued.
The incident took place when the bus collided with a bike while travelling on the Bengaluru-Hyderabad route. The collision likely caused a spark, leading to the fire, said the Kurnool police.
As the bus was air-conditioned, passengers had to break open the window to escape. “Whoever could break open the glass are safe,” said Kurnool Superintendent of Police Vikrant Patil. Read on.
Advertising professional Piyush Pandey, credited for shaping the Bharatiya Janata Party’s 2014 election campaign with the slogan “Ab Ki Baar Modi Sarkar”, has died. He was 70.
Pandey was the worldwide chief creative officer and executive chairman India of New York-based advertising company Ogilvy.
Along with notable advertisements for companies such as Asian Paints, Cadbury’s and Pidilite, Pandey also wrote the lyrics for the song Mile Sur Mera Tumhara, a 1988 national integration campaign highlighting India’s diversity.
Pandey was awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour, in 2016. Read on.
