People sport black armbands on Eid to mark protest against UCC | Ahmedabad News

Members of the Muslim community in different parts of Gujarat, who celebrated Eid on Monday, sported a black armbands on the right hand as a mark of protest against the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

Members of the community in Chhota Udepur and Surat were seen sporting the armband during the Eid prayers on Monday. In Chhota Udepur, youths of the community, who are part of the local Nizam Young Circle, were seen tying arm bands to elders arriving at local masjids to offer prayers.

Nawaz Bakht, president of Nizam Young Circle, Chhota Udepur, said, “Our protest is against the UCC as it stands to overturn the Sharia law, which the Muslims abide by… The Constitution of India gives freedom to people to practice their faith and also follow the tenets of holy texts and religious practices. Our request to the Gujarat government is to allow us to follow our personal law and not impose the UCC on us. So, we are sporting the black bands.”

The members of the community in Chhota Udepur also carried a banner bearing a slogan reading “#RejectUCC”, and urged others to be aware. The banners also included a QR code for members of the community to scan and register their “protest against UCC with the Gujarat UCC committee”.
