Long before Paresh Rawal found his comedic rhythm with director Priyadarshan in a series of laugh riots, he had already built an enviable reputation working with some of Bollywood’s finest comedy filmmakers — from David Dhawan to Rajkumar Santoshi. With films like Haseena Maan Jayegi, Hero No. 1, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, and the now cult-classic Andaaz Apna Apna, Paresh had carved a space for himself in the hearts of audiences through his superb comic timing.
Now, as Andaaz Apna Apna gears up for a theatrical re-release, Paresh reflected on the film’s making in a conversation with Radio Nasha, offering fans a peek into its behind-the-scenes magic — particularly the unforgettable kidnapping scene. Speaking about the sequence, Paresh revealed it was shot in a single take. “Phir chahe woh Rajkumar Santoshi ho ya phir David Dhawan ho, woh log comedy ke scenes mein zyada cut nahi karte hai… single shot hi rakhte hai… jiss wajah se aapko theatre ki feel aati hai,” (Whether it’s Rajkumar Santoshi or David Dhawan, they don’t use too many cuts in comic scenes… they prefer single shots… which is why it feels like live theatre.) He compared this approach to performing on stage, crediting it for the natural energy and chemistry between actors that makes such scenes memorable. “Some of the dialogues in that scene were crackling,” he said, adding that it was all thanks to the organic give-and-take between him, Salman Khan, and Aamir Khan.

When asked about the enduring popularity of his character in the film, Paresh humbly credited the writers and directors for taking a chance on him. “Unn dino mein main toh bohot gatiya kism ke villain roles kar raha tha… so iss kism ka role milna… I’m forever grateful to Rajkumar Santoshi.” (Back then, I used to do some really terrible villainous roles… so getting a role like this… I’m forever grateful to Rajkumar Santoshi.) But perhaps the most surprising revelation? Rawal admitted he has never watched the full film. “I’ve never watched the full film… never got the chance.” But with the re-release set for April 25, he will definitely try checking it out.
