Abir Gulaal is the title of a Hindi film to be released on May 9th. Pakistani actor Fawad Khan is its male lead. In the wake of the dastardly Pahalgam terror killings of 26 Hindus, there are calls for banning Abir Gulaal’s theatrical release in India. A social media post calling for the vandalism of theatres that screen the movie has gone viral. “We should burn down theatres that screen this movie fronted by a Pakistani actor,” is the threat.
After the Indo-Pak relations went sour in the wake of Uri and Balakot, most Bollywood production houses stopped working with Pakistani artists like Fawad. Although the Government of India itself has put no ban on Pak artists, the film industry imposed on itself an unofficial ban.
Abir Gulaal is a rare exception. It is said that the makers of the movie didn’t expect backlash against their movie because India and Pakistan have been playing each other on cricket grounds. But the Pahalgam terror attack came out of syllabus, putting the film’s fate in jeopardy.
Many Pak artists with a potential to work in Indian OTT originals have lost offers because of the backlash from Netizens in recent years. Ordinary people are more angry than ever after Pahalgam. It will take a miracle for any Pakistani artist to find work in India after this.
