Continuing with the previously agreed ‘hybrid model’ for India-Pakistan cricketing ties, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi on Saturday confirmed that the Pakistan women’s team will not travel to India for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup. Instead, they will play their fixtures at a neutral venue.
This decision follows the precedent set during the ICC Champions Trophy, where the BCCI declined to send the Indian men`s team to Pakistan due to diplomatic tensions. Consequently, India played their matches at a neutral venue in Dubai.
As part of the hybrid model, both nations are permitted to compete at neutral venues during ICC events hosted by either country. “Just like India didn’t play in Pakistan in the Champions Trophy and were allowed to play at a neutral venue, whatever venue is decided, we will play. When there is an agreement it has to be adhered to,” Naqvi said.
He further noted that the final decision regarding the alternate venue will rest with the BCCI and the ICC, who are jointly organising the tournament. The World Cup is scheduled to take place in India from September 29 to October 26, with Australia entering as defending champions.
The PCB chief also commended the Pakistan women’s team for their stellar performance in the qualifying stage. The team secured qualification for the World Cup by winning all five of their matches in the Qualifiers held in Lahore. Pakistan defeated Ireland, Scotland, West Indies, Thailand, and Bangladesh to advance with an unblemished record.
“The team showed how to take home advantage and play like a collective unit. I am happy that women’s cricket is doing well now,” Naqvi remarked, expressing pride in the team’s cohesion and strategy.
He further revealed that the PCB will announce a special reward to recognize the squad’s exceptional effort and qualification.
Naqvi concluded by stating his satisfaction with Pakistan successfully hosting yet another ICC event, following the Champions Trophy, reinforcing the country’s growing stature as a capable cricketing host.
