G Ranganathan, the owner of the pharmaceutical company that manufactured the Coldrif cough syrup, which is allegedly linked to the deaths of at least 22 children in Madhya Pradesh, has been arrested in Chennai. He has been booked on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and adulteration of drugs.

Authorities had one sample of Coldrif had 48.6% of diethylene glycol in it. The permissible limit of diethylene glycol as an impurity is 0.1%. However, drug officials Scroll spoke to said that the chemical is unsafe even in trace amounts.

Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav has announced that if his party wins the upcoming Bihar Assembly polls, one member of each family will be provided with a government job within 20 days. Yadav said that the ruling National Democratic Alliance government had failed to provide jobs and employment for 20 years.

“I had promised government jobs in the last Assembly polls as well [in 2020],” Yadav said. “During the brief period I was in power, five lakh jobs were provided. You can imagine what could be possible had I got a five-year term.”

The Uttar Pradesh police has told the Supreme Court that an FIR has been filed on a witness’ complaint that he was threatened and offered a bribe of Rs 1 lakh not to testify in the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence case involving former Union minister Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra. In August, the court had questioned the police for failing to look into the witness’ complaint and directed them to verify the allegations.

The main case pertains to the deaths of eight persons, including four farmers, in October 2021, as violence broke out after a vehicle allegedly belonging to Ashish Mishra ran over a group of demonstrators, who were protesting against the Union government’s now-repealed farm laws. Read on.


The Supreme Court has directed the Bihar State Legal Services Authority to ensure that free legal aid for filing appeals is provided to all voters excluded from the electoral roll following a special intensive revision of the list. It urged the authority to issue directions in this regard to all District Legal Services Authorities on Thursday, “since time to file appeals is running short”.

The bench said that the order will apply to even those voters whose names were not in the draft list.

At least 47 lakh voters in Bihar were excluded from the final electoral roll published by the Election Commission on September 30. As many as 7.2 crore electors were listed in the draft rolls published on August 1, while 65.6 lakh names were removed from it. Read on.


The Telangana High Court has issued a stay on a state government order that increased reservations for Other Backward Classes in the upcoming local body elections to 42%. The bench directed the Congress government in the state to file its counter-affidavit within four weeks and granted two weeks’ time to the petitioners to file their objections thereafter.

The gram panchayat elections in the state are set to be held in three phases on October 31, November 4 and November 8. The Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency and Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency polls are scheduled for October 23 and 27. Read on.
