Over 1,000 kg of cannabis worth Rs 1.01 crore, “concealed in secret sections” behind the drivers’ cabin, were seized from two transport trucks in two separate cases in Surat and Vadodara on Tuesday. While the Surat Rural police nabbed two persons and seized 747 kg cannabis worth Rs 74.69 lakhs, the Harni police station in Vadodara has begun a probe into the “unattended truck” — found 150 km away from the first one — in which 45 packets containing 270 kg cannabis worth Rs 27 lakh were found.
Surat Rural police, after intercepting the truck near Valthan village, arrested Sanjay Bishwal (25), the driver, and Kalia Pradhan (23), the cleaner — both residents of Odisha — under the provisions of the NDPS Act. The vehicle was allegedly transporting the contraband from Mumbai to Ahmedabad.
The seizure by Harni police was made after they acted on a tip-off and found the truck near a hotel along the Ahmedabad-Mumbai National Highway. The Surat police too acted on a specific input regarding a transport truck bearing a Maharashtra registration number.
Police Inspector SV Vasava of Harni police station in Vadodara said that a process to identify the owner of the vehicle has been initiated.
Meanwhile, Surat Rural police, in a statement, said that the arrested accused allegedly admitted that they had “previously transported cannabis to different parts of Gujarat from Odisha via Mumbai”. The police have also declared one Sharat Rajendrapradhan and another unidentified person as wanted in the case, only revealing that their role is being probed.
