OpenAI finally rolls out ChatGPT’s image generator to all free users

Summary: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced today that ChatGPT’s native image generator is now free for everyone. While OpenAI planned to roll out the feature for both premium and free tiers, it delayed it for non-paying users. Altman then said that the company’s GPUs were under a tremendous load due to the huge demand.

ChatGPT is one of the most popular AI-powered assistants that helps you do many things. However, its usage skyrocketed since OpenAI added new features and improvements, especially the GPT-4-powered image generator. You must have come across all those Ghibli-style anime artworks on social media in the last few days. It’s the result of that. Going with the hype and to add even more users to the platform, OpenAI today announced that ChatGPT’s native image generator is now available for free users, too.

OpenAI has rolled out ChatGPT’s native image generator to all free users

Earlier in the day, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, announced the launch in a post on X. He noted, “chatgpt image gen now rolled out to all free users!” The announcement came as the hype of the Ghibli trend is still fresh across social media.

Although ChatGPT’s image generator is free, there are usage limits. Altman didn’t mention the capped limit in his recent tweet. However, he has previously said that the free tier would get three image generations per day. Contrary to the CEO’s words, users on the free tier have reported being able to generate images only twice.

OpenAI launched the improved image generator on March 25th. The tech giant initially planned to roll out the feature across the ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, and Free plans.

The feature was delayed for the free tier

The company delayed the rollout to non-paying users due to excessive use of the image generator right after launch. Altman even joked about this via tweet, saying, “our GPUs are melting.” The hype of the Ghiblification was so real that at one point ChatGPT bagged one million new users in mere one hour. While ChatGPT is busy pleasing users through its image generation capabilities, OpenAI has raised $40 billion in new funding.
