Summary: OnePlus has given more of an explanation as to why its plans for a foldable have been put on hold. The company says there are multiple factors, but mainly, the foldables category needs to be more mainstream.
OnePlus says its plans not to release a foldable phone this year aren’t about exiting the market on foldables, but rather, they’re about taking a step back and letting foldables mature and move forward before the company continues work on them.
Earlier this year, OnePlus announced that it wasn’t going to be releasing a OnePlus Open 2 in 2025. This, of course, has baffled some fans of the original phone, because it was so good, you’d think that OnePlus would want to capitalize on that popularity. However, OnePlus isn’t content with simply iterating on foldables every year, little by little. It wants to make truly innovative strides that help push the market forward.
Quite honestly, this isn’t too different from what Valve has said about releasing a Steam Deck 2. It won’t be making a Steam Deck 2 for the sake of making one that only comes with a few small updates. So, OnePlus is taking a very similar approach. It’s stepping back to let things mature a bit and get better before it releases another foldable phone.
OnePlus plans to release a foldable once foldables are more mainstream
This is basically the long and short of it, but there’s a bit more to it than that. Speaking with TechRadar recently, OnePlus’ Senior Product Marketing Manager Rudolf Xu said it’s all about “solving common challenges” that the industry as a whole is facing with foldables.
“In the foldable industry, the common challenge for every smartphone maker is [working out] how to make the phone slimmer, lighter, and the crease less visible, while also, at the same time, not sacrificing other key specs when you are trying to solve those challenges,” Xu said.
Foldables aren’t economically viable for the company right now
In addition to wanting meaningful innovation in the foldable space with its next release, OnePlus also wants it to be an economically viable device category before putting out another phone. Xu notes that while the foldable space is growing, it’s not doing so at a very fast pace yet. Year-over-year, Xu says, the growth for foldables is about 2.9%. That’s certainly growth, but it’s not enough for OnePlus to be releasing foldables every single year like Samsung.
Xu says the category has to be more mainstream before it can justify making more. Foldables being more mainstream means people are spending more money on foldables. Which likely means there’s more of a chance for foldables to make OnePlus more money on them.
