On the first day of his job, a 24-year-old staffer at an eatery in the Dhankawadi area of Pune was killed in a fire that started due to a leaking gas cylinder on Sunday. The eatery and two adjoining shops located in the KK Market area of Dhankawadi suffered damage due to the fire.
Fire Brigade officials said the fire started at the Saiba Tea Shop in the KK Market area at 4 pm on Sunday. “Initial information suggests that a staffer had kept a pot of milk for boiling when the leaking gas from the cylinder kept nearby caught fire. The fire soon spread in the eatery. Other people present managed to come out but one person could not,” said Fire Officer Sunil Naiknavre.
“After receiving calls, we deployed the fire tender and brought the fire under control within a few minutes. We managed to take out three gas cylinders from the eatery. One staffer, Santosh, suffered major burns and has succumbed to the injuries,” the fire officer added.
After the fire was controlled, a cooling operation was performed by spraying water to avert any secondary fire.
