No ProMotion Display for iPhone 17 & iPhone 17 Air, Leak Claims

No ProMotion Display for iPhone 17 & iPhone 17 Air, Leak Claims

Apple first introduced the ProMotion display technology with the iPhone 13 Pro in 2021. Ever since, this feature has remained exclusively for Pro iPhone models. But since last February, numerous reports have suggested that Apple will offer the ProMotion display technology in the entire iPhone 17 range this year. However, a Weibo leaker who goes by the name Fixed Focus Digital claims otherwise. The tipster suggests that the base iPhone 17 and 17 Air models won’t have ProMotion displays.

Fixed Focus Digital has previously accurately predicted many iPhone features, including correctly revealing the iPhone 16E moniker before the official launch. The sources now inform them that this year’s non-Pro iPhone models use “just a standard 120Hz screen, not ProMotion with adaptive refresh rate.”

Essentially, the tipster says that the two non-Pro variants would be offering screens with high refresh rates. However, they are lacking ProMotion display features. Notably, Digital Chat Station, another reliable tipster from China, also suggested the presence of a high screen refresh rate on these models.

What’s the difference?

The difference between the regular 120Hz refresh rate and ProMotion display technology is more significant than it might appear. Both technologies offer smoother media and visual experiences compared to the standard displays with a 60Hz refresh rate, which is mainly noticeable during scrolling and gaming. However, the ProMotion screen technology offers a variable refresh rate.

This means the iPhones with the ProMotion display tech can dynamically change their refresh rate anywhere from 1Hz to 120Hz. The refresh rate adjusts based on the content users view on the screen and their interactions. Furthermore, the ProMotion displays can conserve battery by dynamically adjusting the refresh rate.

However, the fixed 120Hz displays maintain their high refresh rate constantly, which leads to heavy battery drainage. You would still enjoy enhanced visual fluidity, but it will lower the battery life of your iPhone.

A fixed 120Hz screen panel also means that the vanilla iPhone 17 and 17 Air would lack the ProMotion technology’s always-on display functionality. It displays the clock, widgets, notifications, and more, even when the phone remains locked and idle.

That said, if the Apple iPhone 17 and 17 Air’s screen is indeed 120Hz, it’s still a significant improvement over the iPhone 16’s 60Hz display. Apple plans to debut the new iPhones this September, so we can expect more clarification on the matter in the coming months.
