New terminal at Patna Airport to be launched ahead of Assembly elections

The terminal building will be equipped with cutting-edge facilities, including 64 check-in counters, and five aerobridges, sources said

Ahead of the Bihar legislative assembly elections scheduled later this year, the Centre is set to launch a state-of-the-art new terminal at the Patna airport.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the new terminal building, designed to handle 3,000 passengers during peak hours and 10 million annually, on Thursday.

The terminal building will be equipped with cutting-edge facilities, including 64 check-in counters, and five aerobridges, according to industry sources.

On the airport side, an apron area has been developed for the parking of 11 aircraft, including nine A320 or B737-800 aircraft and two ATR-72s. The ground floor of the new terminal building is dedicated for arrival while the elevated first floor is dedicated for departure.

Besides, a corridor has been constructed from the new terminal building that connects to MLCP (multi-level car parking), which can accommodate 1,100 cars, along with a commercial floor.

Design theme

In terms of its design theme, the terminal pays homage to Bihar’s rich cultural heritage, incorporating elements of Mithila art and the architectural style of the Nalanda Mahavihara ruins.

Apart from Patna airport, both the Central and State governments are accelerating the development of key aviation projects before the elections.

Earlier, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in the 2025-26 Budget, proposed to facilitate the development of greenfield airports in Bihar.

“These will be in addition to the expansion of the capacity of Patna airport and a brownfield airport at Bihar,” she said.

The massive push for airport infrastructure is expected to play a crucial role in the political narratives, said an industry source, adding that parties try to showcase development as a major achievement to woo voters.

Recently, the Nitish Kumar-led State government announced plans to develop 15 airports. At present, Bihar has three operational airports.

In addition, the Central government, via its regional air connectivity Udan scheme, plans to lay the groundwork for airports at Valmikinagar, Birpur, Madhubani, Munger, Saharsa, and Muzaffarpur.
