A perception has become stronger that Bollywood movie celebs have not spoken out strongly against Pakistan in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attacks and India’s retaliatory Operation Sindoor. Bollywood’s integrity has taken a beating. In the past, many Hindi movie stars were quick to support the Palestinian cause, for example. Ostensibly, they did it because they received lakhs of rupees into their bank accounts. Everything is PR-driven these days.
Netizens are unhappy that Bollywood has been “visibly absent” in recent days at a time when India is defending its sovereignty. “Bollywood lends its voice only for money. An example is the ‘All Eyes on Rafah’ campaign they did for Palestine. The influence of elements from Pakistan on Bollywood can be seen,” writes Vishal Bhargava, accusing the Hindi film industry of not making use of its soft power to amplify pro-India narratives.
There is a feeling that Bollywood has been pampered for decades. “Bollywood actors are treated like heroes in India. In reality, though, they are over-glorified public figures who prioritize image over integrity,” a netizen opines.
Hindi film celebs have no admiration for India, netizens argue. Aryaputra writes, “Bollywood is a third-rate hybrid mutation of anglicized coconuts of South Bombay and Anglosphere. Their idea of Indian culture is the same as that of the average White guy who derives pleasure watching Slumdog Millionaire.”
But is Bollywood commanding respect the way it used to in the 1980s and 1990s? Bollywood has long lost its cultural appeal for crores of Indians. “Bollywood isn’t a source of soft power. People watch ‘Friends’ and wish they were Americans. Nobody watches Bollywood and thinks it’s anything but a fun diversion,” argues HM Brough. Â
