Nepali Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned from his post amid widespread protests against corruption and his government. This came after protesters on Tuesday set fire to his home in Balkot town, the day after 19 persons died in clashes with security forces.

The protests were sparked by the Nepali government’s ban on 26 social media platforms, which it revoked on Monday night.

The Kathmandu district administration imposed an indefinite curfew in the capital. All flights at the Tribhuvan International Airport were cancelled amid security concerns.

In addition to Oli’s private residence, protesters also attacked the homes of the Deputy Prime Minister Bishnu Paudel, Communications Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, who resigned on Monday. This led the Nepali Army to evacuate several ministers from their homes. Read more.

The families of the six persons killed in the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast have challenged a special court’s acquittal of seven accused, including BJP leader Pragya Singh Thakur and Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Purohit.

The appeal was filed in the Bombay High Court on Monday.

On September 29, 2008, six persons were killed and around 100 injured when an explosive strapped to a motorcycle went off near a mosque in Malegaon in northern Maharashtra.

The petitioners have sought to reverse the July 31 verdict by a National Investigation Agency court, which had acquitted the seven individuals. The special court had ruled that the prosecution failed to prove the guilt of the accused beyond a reasonable doubt.

The petitioners contended that faults in the investigation cannot be the reason to acquit the persons accused in the matter and said that a trial court judge should not act as a “postman or mute spectator” in a criminal trial. Read more.

This was the latest in a series of welfare measures announced by the state’s National Democratic Alliance government in the run-up to the polls. Read more.

The Israeli military ordered all residents of Gaza city and its neighbourhoods to “evacuate immediately”, warning that it would operate with “great force” to eliminate the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

The evacuation order marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, which has been intensifying since Tel Aviv announced its plans to take military control of Gaza city last month.

The residents have been told to move to a designated “humanitarian zone” in Al-Mawasi, near Khan Younis on the southern coast.

But the zone is already severely overcrowded, with thousands of displaced Palestinians living in tents. It also covers only about 12% of Gaza’s territory, making it one of the smallest humanitarian zones designated by Israel. Read more.
