Nepal protest toll rises to 35

The toll from the violent protests in Nepal against corruption and the government increased to 35, The Kathmandu Post reported on Thursday.

Twenty-five deceased persons have been identified, the newspaper quoted officials at the forensic medicine department of the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital as saying. The bodies were taken to the institute for postmortem.

On Wednesday, the country’s health ministry said that more than 1,000 persons were injured in the clashes on Monday and Tuesday. Hundreds of them were in 28 hospitals across the country.

About 700 of them have been discharged.

Army relaxes prohibitory orders

The Nepali Army, which has taken control of the country’s internal security, allowed public movement for a few hours while extending prohibitory orders in the Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur districts.

The prohibitory orders will be in effect on Thursday between 10 am and 5 pm. This will be followed by a night curfew from 7 pm on Thursday to 6 am on Friday.

On Thursday, public movement for essential work will be allowed between 6 am and 10 am, followed by 5 pm to 7 pm.

The Kathmandu airport resumed flights on Thursday.

The agitation in the country was sparked by the Nepali government’s ban on 26 social media platforms, but evolved into a broader protest against alleged corruption and misgovernance.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned from his post on Tuesday amid the protests. Hours later, the Army said that it will assume control of security operations in the country as violent unrest continued in Kathmandu and other cities.

On Wednesday, the protest leaders proposed former Chief Justice Sushila Karki to serve as the country’s interim prime minister. Karki told CNN-News18 that she had accepted the protesters’ request.

On Thursday, Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah said that he will support Karki as the interim prime minister. “This interim government’s job is to conduct elections and give new mandate to the country,” Shah said on social media.
