The Nintendo Switch 2 is almost here, and while Nintendo hasn’t shared a single morsel of information regarding new features, there are several that I hope to see in the upcoming console. I also think this is the perfect time to bring these up, now that Nintendo is getting to fully reveal the Switch 2 on April 2, which is next Wednesday.
Before we get into all that, though, it’s worth noting that even if the Nintendo Switch 2 doesn’t have every feature I’m hoping for in terms of a console upgrade, I’ll still buy it. I want that larger screen and larger Joy-Con controllers. I want the increased performance, even though we don’t know how much better the performance will be yet. It took me years to get into the Switch platform, but once I got there, I was hooked. And I need to have the new console for whatever magical games Nintendo has planned for it.
That being said, there are several things I hope Nintendo implements for the best possible experience. Because, as much as I love my Nintendo Switch OLED, it isn’t perfect. So here’s what I think Nintendo could improve on by adding these features to the Nintendo Switch 2.
Longer battery life
This is the obvious one here, and I probably didn’t NEED to put it in, but it’s probably one of the things I’m hoping for most. The battery life on the Nintendo Switch OLED is good, but it could be better. And after playing games a lot on my ROG Ally X, my desire for improved battery life on the Nintendo Switch 2 has only been amplified.
Part of me is skeptical that the improvements will be significant because with improvements to performance, the system will probably draw more power. However, I’m still hoping for Nintendo to pull off some sort of wizardry and give fans a huge boost to not only the performance but also the battery life. I will typically get 4-5 hours when I play The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom on my Switch OLED. So, going off of that, I’d love to see the Nintendo Switch 2 get about 7-8 hours with a game that demanding.
A 120Hz display
Look, it would be amazing to see the Switch 2 come with a 4K display, but I don’t think that’s a very reasonable expectation. Especially since you really don’t need 4K resolution on smaller screens. What would be nice to see, though, is the Switch 2 coming with a 120Hz display. Imagine playing the next Legend of Zelda game with the capability to hit up to 120 frames per second.
This could be an even more important feature for the console if the rumors are true about it getting several ports of games like Final Fantasy VII Remake, Call of Duty, and others. Many of the rumored games to get a port all look amazing with higher frame rates. The Switch OLED can support frame rates of up to 60 fps. With that in mind, a 120Hz display for support of up to 120 fps seems like the logical evolution.
With the rumored performance improvements, this should be an easy target for Nintendo to hit. If mobile phones can do it, Nintendo should be able to do it.
4K support when docked
I’ve already said that the Switch 2 doesn’t need to have a 4K screen, and I stand by that. I think 1080p is perfectly fine for the size that the Switch 2’s display is going to be. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t want 4K support at all. The Switch 2 will still be able to dock, so you can play games on the TV. In this situation, I really hope Nintendo adds 4K support with HDMI 2.1 connectivity support.
This will allow Switch 2 (and potentially Switch 1) games to look better than ever. With more crisp visuals, more vibrant colors, and game worlds that pull you in like never before. With the rumored price increase of Nintendo’s next console, I think it’s only fitting that maximum resolution support when the Switch 2 is docked is increased to 4K.
Built-in voice chat
This is one of those features that is likely since it’s been rumored before fairly recently. That being said, it’s still not a confirmed feature, and we won’t know more about that until Nintendo’s full reveal. It’s also entirely possible that Nintendo may not share all the details about the Switch 2’s features next week. I do think it will lay everything out, though.
As for the built-in voice chat, it would just make things more convenient for people who play multiplayer games on the Switch 2. While voice chat is possible on the Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED, you need to use a mobile app to facilitate it. There’s just no option for native, on-device voice chat. Which is a shame.
So it would be nice to see Nintendo add it with this upcoming console. Furthermore, this could be even more improved if Discord were available on the Switch 2 as well. Of course, that relies more on Discord doing the heavy lifting in making that a reality.
Achievements
This is less of a feature about hardware and more about the user experience, but I’d love to see the Nintendo Switch 2 incorporate achievements. Not everyone enjoys hunting these down, but plenty of people do. With achievements, people who like to 100% their games have something else to hunt for. Achievements only add player retention by giving the players who like achievement-hunting something else to do within the game.
It gives developers a chance to add some varied layers of replayability to their games to keep players engaged. Not to mention, this is a great way for single-player games to last longer. It also seems like a relatively simple way to keep players interested after they’ve beaten a game’s main story and content.
Sure, some achievements would naturally be acquired through regular gameplay. But harder achievements could be added that require a little more finesse and a little more effort to acquire. Achievements are also a cool way to compare your gameplay with your friends. It sort of acts like a method of friendly competition, seeing who can get the hardest achievements first. I just don’t think there’s any good reason not to add them. So here’s hoping Nintendo implements them with the new system.
Themes
When the PS4 was the current console and it was my main form of playing games on a console, the themes were one of the coolest things about the user interface. I would LOVE to see themes made available for the Switch 2. The inclusion of themes also doesn’t detract from the experience of anyone who doesn’t enjoy them. Because you can just opt not to apply a theme. Adding them for the players who want more customization options only improves the experience.
Imagine having a Legend of Zelda or Metroid theme that applies a skin over the UI so the icons and everything all look different. Where even the system’s UI sounds match the theme, and the homescreen music matches the theme. Just like on the PS4. This would be amazing, and it would easily make a large majority of people who end up buying the Switch love it that much more. Please, Nintendo, I beg of you. Add themes.
Hall Effect Joysticks
This is probably my number one desire for the Nintendo Switch 2. While I haven’t experienced any issues with stick drift on my Switch OLED Joy-Con controllers, stick drift has popped up on at least three of my DualSense controllers. It sucks. And it just makes me afraid the issue will eventually pop up on my Switch OLED, though I hope that doesn’t happen.
Nintendo could easily avoid this by adding Hall Effect joysticks to the Joy-Con controllers that come with the Switch 2. The issue was so big with the Joy-Con controllers on the original Switch; it was a majorly widespread problem, and it’s the reason most people still talk about it. Even all these years after the console has launched.
There are probably more things I could come up with that would be nice to have on the Nintendo Switch 2. That being said, these are the things that I have been thinking about for a while. And I hope at least some of these things make it into Nintendo’s new console. Nintendo will fully reveal the Switch 2 on April 2 during its Nintendo Direct livestream event. You can watch the stream on Nintendo’s official YouTube channel.
