Mumbai: Police hunt man who conned, sexually assaulted 3 women

Mumbai Police have booked a repeat offender for allegedly luring women with promises of marriage, coercing them into sexual relationships, and then fleeing with their money and gold jewellery. Three FIRs have been registered against the accused, who is currently absconding. The women told mid-day that despite filing multiple complaints, police inaction has enabled the accused to continue his offences. The man is also accused of physically and sexually assaulting the women.

The first FIR was registered in 2018 at Amboli police station by a then 36-year-old woman, who alleged that the accused, identified as Avaiz Ansari, approached her with promises of marriage, pushed her into a sexual relationship, and later blackmailed her. The same year, police arrested Ansari, but he was soon released on bail.
The second FIR was registered in October 2024 at the MIDC police station by a 40-year-old doctor from

Kurla. Speaking to mid-day, the complainant said, “He approached me via social media, and when I met him for the first time, he arrived in an SUV with an armed driver. At first glance, he appeared well-to-do, rich, and powerful—no one would suspect anything. He would boast about his political connections and ties with top officials. He said he wanted to marry me and, under that pretext, coerced me into a sexual relationship. Eventually, he took money from me and left. It took me a year to gather the courage to approach the police. I was left penniless, and to this day, I am paying the EMI on the loan I took to give him that money.” The victim reportedly lost over R1 crore to the accused. In her complaint, she has levelled charges of rape, breach of trust, and cheating, among other offences, against the accused.

A 28-year-old lawyer from Ghatkopar, is the most recent complainant against the accused. By the time he approached her, the accused had allegedly changed his name from Avaiz Ansari to Ahmed. The victim said she met him in 2018 at her workplace in Jogeshwari, where he was her superior.

“I met him in 2018; he was my boss. He would behave inappropriately, constantly expressing his intention to marry me. He would make excuses to take me to hotels under the pretext of business meetings, where he would force himself on me. He also made intimate videos and used them to blackmail me, even threatening my family. He forced me into signing an agreement to marry him. Those videos were repeatedly used to make me do things I wasn’t comfortable with,” the survivor told mid-day.

After enduring the ordeal for over six years, she registered a non-cognisable complaint, followed by an FIR on March 18 at Meghwadi police station.

She further alleged, “He forcibly took me to his hometown in Uttar Pradesh and kept me in isolation. I suffered multiple miscarriages after he force-fed me pills to terminate my pregnancies. In 2023, when I got pregnant again, I managed to escape from UP to save myself and my baby. After I returned, his threats escalated—he would follow me everywhere. I wanted to go to the police earlier, but he kept threatening me using his political connections. I remained silent out of fear for my baby and my parents’ safety.”

She lost over Rs 1.4 crore, including cash and gold ornaments. She took out a loan to pay the accused and he has not returned any of the money.

Following the FIR filed by the third victim, multiple teams have been deployed to trace the accused on the orders of IPS Sachin Gunjal, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone X. “Several teams are currently working to track down the accused—one is in Uttar Pradesh, another in Haryana, and one more in Delhi. He is aware that we are on his trail, which is why he keeps anxiously shifting locations. He also frequently changes his phone SIM card, making it difficult to trace him. But I have instructed my teams not to return until he is apprehended. We will catch him at any cost,” Gunjal said.

“I have lost everything—my money, my pride, my confidence. He took it all from me. My entire life is at stake, even my safety. And yet, he roams free, without a worry, with no accountability. All I want is to see him behind bars,” said the third victim, expressing her anguish.

Meanwhile, the second victim added, “To this day, I’m hopelessly paying the EMI. I’ll probably be doing this for the rest of my life and still won’t be able to repay the money—money that’s not even with me, but with the man who ruined my life. He’s out there, probably destroying some woman’s life right now. I just hope we all get justice.”
