
Mumbai Police have arrested three suspects for allegedly stealing gold jewellery and cash worth Rs 4.07 crore from a jewellery shop in Parel area of the city after days of investigations, an official said.
He said that the main accused, an employee of the shop, working as a salesman fled with the valuables on September 8, and was later tracked down to his hometown in Rajasthan, he said.
According to the Bhoiwada police, the one of the three suspects in the case, Jeetu Nawaram Chaudhary (23), was working at Jalichand Jewellers located on Dr B.A. Road and between 2 pm on September 8 and 10:30 am on September 9, he allegedly stole the gold and cash.
When the owner of the jewellery store realised about the theft, he reached out to the police and a case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
“Multiple police teams were formed for detailed investigations in the matter and officials were also immediately sent to the prime accused`s hometown in Sadada village in Bali taluka of Pali district in Rajasthan since the accused was suspected to reach his hometown after the theft,” the official said.
Working in parallel, Mumbai Crime Branch`s Unit 4 also launched an investigation. Based on technical inputs and local informers, the police successfully traced the the main accused and two of his accomplices, he said.
Apart from Jeetu, the other two were identified as Kamlesh Wagharam Chaudhary (26), Bharatkumar Otaram Chaudhary (38). All three are natives of Pali in Rajasthan.
Police said Jeetu would stay overnight at the store, sleeping in the loft after work, making him one of the most trusted employees by the owners.
“So far, the police officials have recovered around 70 per cent of the stolen property, and efforts are ongoing to recover the rest,” the official said.
