Woman police chief?
With the incumbent Commissioner of Mumbai Police retiring this month end, the names of possible candidates to replace him have started doing the rounds. Recently, an influential person at a private gathering is said to have said that with women occupying the posts of Chief Secretary and DGP in the state, the trend could continue when it comes to the post of the Mumbai Police Commissioner.
Deadlock over OSDs
More than 100 days after the formation of the government, the CMO is yet to clear the appointments of several personal secretaries and Officers on Special Duty (OSD) in ministers’ offices. The list includes officials for some senior ministers as well and sources say that they have conveyed to the CMO that they will work only with the officers they appoint and not with the one CMO wants them to work with. The deadlock continues.
Agri ministers in trouble?
The agriculture ministers in BJP-led governments seem to have a penchant to court controversies. And Manikrao Kokate is no exception. His remark that farmers spend funds under agriculture schemes for children’s marriage is the latest. In the past, agriculture minister Abdul Sattar (Shiv Sena) received backlash for his statement, “Farmers’ suicide is not a new issue, and it has been happening for many years.” Sattar’s replacement in NCP’s Dhananjay Munde also ran into trouble on alleged farmers’ insurance schemes. During the regime of Devendra Fadnavis-led BJP and undivided Shiv Sena government (2014-2019), the then agriculture minister Eknath Khadse had resigned over land dispute. Kokate has already ran into trouble for housing fraud, leading to his conviction. Though he has got a stay order, anti-farmer remarks are bound to compound crisis for him and his party led by Deputy CM Ajit Pawar.
Questioning Uddhav’s Hindutva
Maharashtra BJP used the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025 to question Shiv Sena (UBT) on Hindutva agenda. Not surprisingly, even 48 hours before the bill was passed in the Parliament, state BJP had started sending alerts with a question: “Let’s watch what stand Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) takes on the legislation? Will they honour late Bal Thackeray or abandon Hindutva?” These alerts were part of a strategy to build up its campaign. With BMC polls expected to be held later this year, BJP has decided to sharpen its attack against estranged ally on core issue of Hindutva for what they believe was a ploy for appeasement of Muslim vote bank.
