Motorola has been on a tear recently, even though you might not have heard about them in recent months and years. That’s because Motorola has shifted their strategy. Instead of targeting flagship devices like many of its competitors, Motorola is mostly targeting the sub-$600 market. And reserving the above-$500 market for their Razr foldables.
It has worked out well for Motorola, as they’ve been able to pick up a pretty good chunk or market here in the US and North America as a whole. Almost a resurrection for Motorola, after the Lenovo purchase back in 2014.
Now, enter the new Motorola Edge (2025). This is a $549 smartphone, which makes it $50 more expensive than the Google Pixel 9a, but that’s not a bad thing. I think this is still a better purchase than the Pixel 9a. Which is quite surprising, because I recommend the Pixel 9a quite often.
Motorola has better specs, faster charging and better cameras?
Starting with the Razr a little over a month ago, Motorola has really turned over a new leaf when it comes to its cameras. A big part of this is their PANTONE partnership. You see, Motorola isn’t just using PANTONE for colors and materials on their devices, but also for the colors in pictures and video taken with their cameras. It’s what made me fall in love with the Razr Ultra, which you can read more about in my Motorola Razr Ultra review.
The same thing is going on here with the Motorola Edge. Now, for a $549 smartphone, I didn’t expect stellar cameras, especially after coming from flagships like the OPPO Find X8 Ultra and the OnePlus 13. But the 50-megapixel primary sensor here does take some pretty nice pictures. This is a pretty large sensor too actually, at 1/1.56″. That actually makes it larger than the Pixel 9a, surprisingly. Of course, the other thing Google has going for it is, the computational photography. Motorola isn’t quite on Google’s level when it comes to software, but I actually prefer the pictures from the Edge.
Motorola also included a 50-megapixel ultrawide sensor, which is also used for macro shots. I do wish Motorola would opt for using telephoto macro, but I understand why it’s not on a phone in this price range. Motorola did include a telephoto here, which is actually a bit surprising, since Pixel 9a does not have one, and if we look at the more expensive iPhone 16e, it has a single camera. Motorola has a 10-megapixel 3x telephoto here, and it’s fine. It’s not going to blow you away, but it’ll get the job done.
The specs on the Motorola Edge are also pretty impressive for this price. It sports the MediaTek Dimensity 7400 Ultra. That’s not a super powerful chip, and maxes out at 2.6GHz, so it’s not meant for heavy users or gamers. But for everyday tasks, it works just fine. Motorola also included 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage here – Pixel 9a has just 128GB at its starting price. It also has a slightly larger battery versus the Pixel 9a, at 5,200mAh.
Finally, let’s talk charging. Motorola is perhaps the fastest USB-C charging smartphone on the market, with 68W. This is over USB-C and not USB-A like what OPPO, OnePlus, and realme do. Unfortunately, it is not included in the box, but if you pick up Motorola’s 68W charger, it’ll charge that Edge up incredibly fast. In about 40 minutes.
Motorola’s material game is on another level these days
Most people probably don’t care about this, but Motorola is one of the few OEMs that design their phones so that you can keep it out of a case. Like many of its other product lines, the new Edge 2025 also has a faux leather back.
It is unfortunate that Motorola is only offering one color for the Edge 2025 here though. Which is the PANTONE Deep Forest, this is a dark green color with a faux leather finish. It does look really incredible. And it’s actually one of the bigger reasons I keep using this phone.
Even on Motorola’s cheaper Moto G smartphones, they are using faux leather. That’s much better than glass, or even plastic. Especially at that price, it makes the Moto G and also the Motorola Edge feel much more premium, despite its lower price tag.
